Exiting the IB Diploma Programme

While some IB Diploma Programme courses are considered by the IBO to be two-year courses (ex. History, English, Biology, Theatre, etc), they are considered by Wake County, NC DPI and Millbrook High School to be one-year courses that conclude at the end of the junior year and start anew with part 2 at the start of the senior year.  Thus, if a student decides not to continue the Diploma Programme after the conclusion of the junior year, they can do so without concern for loss of credit or any other ramifications for exiting a course early.

That said, because all Diploma Programme courses (like all MHS courses) are a year long, students must complete the junior year of the Diploma Programme prior to withdrawing from the Diploma Programme.  Students that commit to and start the Diploma Programme must complete the junior year.

If a student does choose to withdraw from the Diploma Programme at the end of the junior year, they must submit to the Diploma Programme coordinator the DP Exit Form.  Students must also be aware that they willl be responsible for all course requirements through the end of the junior year.  The include,

  • all internal and external assessments for courses that are testing that year
  • CAS requirements for each remaining quarter of the junior year
  • extended essay, including the research and writing of the first draft of the extended essay, the scheduling and engagement with required supervisor meetings
