Class of 2020
Junior Year
Oct. 2, 2018: Meet with students to introduce Extended Essay, idea log, etc.
Oct. 8, 2018: Detailed introduction to the Extended Essay
(Introduction to research process,EE requirements)
Oct. 16, 2018: Extended Essay criteria and topic exploration
(Introduction of EE criteria, general and subject specific, discussion of topic selection requirements)
Nov. 16, 2018: Extended Essay Topic Request Form (google form)
Dec. 20, 2018: Meet the Supervisor Student will have introduced self to supervisor (in person) and set up a meeting date for SM#1.
Feb. 1, 2019: Supervisor Meeting #1: Topic and Research Question
At this meeting students will share with supervisors a clear topic for investigation and a question that will serve as the basis for a research question.
Feb. 22, 2019: Supervisor Meeting #2: Research Question and Methodology
At this meeting students will shape and “finalize” a focused and effective research question that is clearly related to the topic of study and will allow for successful research and analysis. The student will work with the supervisor to formulate a plan for investigation of the topic and answering the question, including types of sources needed and how to gather them.
Reflection #1
Following SM#2, student will have one week to finalize the reflection and submit to
supervisor to be initialed.
Mar. 28, 2019: Supervisor Meeting #3: Sources and Content Knowledge
At this meeting, students will discuss sources thus far accumulated and the knowledge about the topic and the research question gained from these sources. The student will consider progress made in terms of the collection of sources and quality information from those sources.
Student will leave the meeting with a clear understanding of continued investigation needs and how to go about doing so.
Reflection #1 must be written on RPPF and in Student EE folder by April 5th or it will be marked as "Non-submission" and will not be accepted.
May 10, 2019: Supervisor Meeting #4: Knowledge and Analysis
At this meeting, students will discuss with supervisors the overall knowledge base the student has acquired regarding the topic of the essay and the research question. The student will explain to the supervisor how the information collected addresses the research question and how the student has analyzed the information to create a thoughtful and response to the question.
Reflection #2
Following SM#4, student will have one week to finalize the reflection and submit to
supervisor to be initialed. Due by: May 17th.
May 17, 2019: Junior EE Library Time
Students will spend two days in media center (DP class periods only) to work on their extended essay drafts. Advisors will be invited to drop in and check on students if they so choose.
Students are expected to leave the media center after Day 2 with a 2,500 word draft that includes citations and updated bibliography.
Reflection #2 must be written on RPPF and in Student EE folder by May 17th or it will be marked as "Non-submission" and will not be accepted.
May 24, 2019: Submission of 1st draft
Submission of 1st draft, no less than 2500 words, to Mr. Baron via google docs.
Senior Year
Sept. 20, 2019: Supervisor Meeting #5: Draft Review
Supervisor will read and give student feedback on 1st draft of their Extended Essay. Primary points of discussion will be organization, flow and the extent to which the arguments made address the research question.
Oct. 18, 2019: Supervisor Meeting #6: Analysis and Evaluation
At this meeting the student and advisor will discuss the analysis and evaluation in the paper that addresses the research question. The student will be able to identify the specific evidence from the research that supports the analysis and evaluation offered.
Oct. 31, 2019: Senior EE Library Time
Students will have one day in the media center to synthesize all information collected with analysis and evaluation, finalizing the second draft of the extended essay. The essay will be shared as a googledoc with the supervisor.
Nov. 22, 2019: Extended Essay Extravaganza!!
Dec. 10, 11, 2019: Submission of Extended Essay – Final Copy!!!
Jan. 17, 2020: Supervisor Meeting #7: Viva Voce
At this meeting the supervisor will conduct a final interview with the candidate that will give the candidate an opportunity to reflect on the student’s learning.
Reflection #3 (January 23rd)
Following SM#7, student will have one week to finalize the reflection and submit to
supervisor . Following this final student submission, the supervisor will offer a final
reflection on the student's EE process.
